Longing...

David Batzer (Cowboy Dave) RTR Wrangler

I find myself longing for wide open spaces
To ride thru pastures that haven’t been fenced
To sit on my pony and ford ‘cross the river
To follow the trails where nature still lives

To top out a rise and see all before me
And nary a car nor a house will there be
Just me and my pony and nature around us
No one to see us... no one to be seen

To follow a path that leads down a holler
Where deer munch on clover and paintbrush are found
The creek in a meadow as pure as the mountains
Within its cool waters the trout still abound

To ride thru the aspen, thru Nature’s Cathedral
Where leaves filter sunlight and quake in the breeze
The light bathes the forest in all of God’s glory
The effect so surreal as if only a dream

I’ve been to these places way up in the mountains
I've watched the elk and the coyotes at play
I've witnessed the magic that God has created
I long to return to it every day

This was the first poem that I remember writing, and the first one I read in public at the Rainbow Trout Ranch. It's a special poem to me, and I hope it touches you, as well.
